Teaching children the joys of Fairies, from a Tooth Fairy

I have a really cool idea that I would love to share with the group. Everyone has been visited by the tooth fairy as a child. It is a very special event in a child's life. The average age is 6yrs old, but it is not unheard of as young as 3yrs, and as old as 8yrs for that first tooth. The tradition is to put that first tooth under the child's pillow, and when the child wakes up, the tooth fairy in exchange for the tooth gives them money.

What did you remember as a child for in exchange for your tooth was it a quarter, a silver dollar?

Well, let us extend that magic for a child. Remember the "Magic Beans" in Jack in the Bean stalk. That coin is no ordinary coin from the tooth fairy, its going to grow something special. Not a money plant, but a candy plant!

Special items to be ready to make this magic work:
1. A small flower pot, have the child fill it with dirt
2. One green, or red or orange tic tac.
3. One small piece of hard candy. (Take wrapper off)
4. One small lollipop, like the ones you find inside a bank that is given to kids. (Take the clear plastic wrapper off.)
5. One whistle lollipop. (Take the wrapper off the lollipop)
6. One blowpop or blowpop size lollipop. (Again take the wrapper off the lollipop)
7. One large spiral lollipop. (Take the wrapper off the lollipop)
8. Glitter, or fairy dust
(Place flower pot is a spot that will not attract bugs, ants, bees, etc.)

The plan: The Tooth fairy leaves a special message about congrats on the first tooth, and a coin in exchange for that tooth. Also, the Tooth fairy leaves instructions about how that coin will grow just once a special Fairy Lollipop, and after the Lollipop is plucked from the flower pot. The child gets to dig in the dirt to find that magic coin again. That first Fairy coin will truly be magical to the child!

Tooth Fairy instructions: Child waters the magic coin before going to bed. Place flower pot by an open window or outside. The note explains that "Every night one of my fairy kin will stop by visit your magic coin" . When child is a sleep, Place the tic tac as if it is starting to poke thru the dirt. Sprinkle very lightly some fairy dust over the tic tac.

The child will see the fairy dust, showing that a fairy visited the magic coin. Again, just before going to bed have the child water the tic tac. When child is asleep, exhange the tic tac for the small hard piece of candy. Repeat the process of sprinkling fairy dust over the candy.

If you want, make little Fairy footprints or tracks going up the flowerpot.....

Repeat this process, now you exchange the small hard piece of candy for a small lollipop.

Repeat this process, until you end with the Largest Spiral Lollipop. Using the Fairy dust or glitter, sprinkle out the message "Enjoy" next the flowerpot, but this time not over the lollipop. Or very carefully, spinkle the dirt around the lollipop with out getting any on the finial lollipop that the child will eat.

Maybe during this time while your child is waiting to see what their magical coin will grow, you might read them a bedtime story of Jack and the Bean stalk.

Remember one thing, dispose of the glitter pieces of candy creatively. You don't want your child to find any candy wrappers, or any of the glittered candy used to make that magical moment for the child. Also, treat that Fairy dust that is left over as something very special as well. If you have any house plants or flowers or garden, suggest that you collect that fairy dust and sprinkle it over them. Telling the child that by doing so you are showing the fairies that you really appreciate the gift. Maybe have the child draw a picture or write a simple note of thank you to the Tooth Fairy, and fellow fairy kin.

Feel free to change to make this idea work for your child or children.

  • This is so sweet!
When my oldest daughter, Rose, was 6, her first loose tooth was very loose, but she was afraid to pull it. We had pizza for dinner one night, and after Rose ate hers, we noticed her tooth was gone! We figured she must have swallowed it. She was SO sad, as she was looking forward to being visited by the tooth fairy, and she cried and cried! I told her she should write a note to the tooth fairy, explaining what had happened, and put it under her pillow. That night, the tooth fairy came, and left Rose a coupon, written in gold, sparkling, swirly script, for the dress of her choice at any store. She was in the little girl wedding/princess dress stage, so we took her to a bridal shop, and she found a beautiful white satin bridesmaid gown, with a lace overskirt, and puffy sleeves. The woman at the counter gladly accepted the coupon ; ) and Rose was thrilled with her wonderful gown! (I made her beaded satin ballet slippers to match the dress.) The tooth fairy always left some different treasure for each subsequent tooth.
